Restoration of a chest of drawers veneered in Rio rosewood and inlaid with satinwood stringing. It has two large drawers and two smaller ones in the upper section. Its frame is made of oak and fir. It is stamped J.BIRKLE on the left upright and also bears the JME mark. It shows some signs of restoration and an ink mark on one side of a drawer.

A journeyman before becoming a master craftsman, he practiced his trade on Rue de Charenton and then Rue Saint-Nicolas. His clientele included the Duke of Orléans, the Princess de Lamballe, and Madame Elizabeth. Later, between 1785 and 1789, Marie Antoinette commissioned pieces from him for the Château de Saint-Cloud. Judging by his extensive, varied, and high-quality output, easily adapted to evolving styles, Bircklé emerges as a conscientious cabinetmaker who sought not luxury or preciousness, but rather decorative effect, hence the limited use of bronze. His production consistently features quality furniture, including commodes in the Regency style.
The restoration of this chest of drawers involved reaming the top, back, bottom, and drawer panels. The side panels were then re-glued before the missing rosewood and satinwood veneer was replaced with new, sawn veneer. This veneer was scraped and sanded before being glued in place with hot glue.

The grafts were then oxidized and the entire piece of furniture was varnished with a colorless shellac. The bronzes were cleaned ultrasonically and then reattached.
