Louis XV/Transitional Commode

Ebénisterie Mathieu Vath

A true renaissance for this commode, which I call Louis XV/transitional because its form and construction are entirely Louis XV. However, the handles and keyhole escutcheons are typically Louis XVI. And I can attest that these are indeed its original fittings. The nail holes match perfectly, and there are no other holes beneath the bronze mounts.

So even if this piece of furniture does not have the shape of what is commonly called the transition style, this chest of drawers is most certainly one of the first attempts at this hybrid style.

The sales catalog indicates that it has remained in the condition it was put up for sale 30 years ago. In short, it's a veritable house of cards. Whether it's the joinery (crossbar, back, top, and side panels) or the veneer, nothing is holding together. There are, of course, numerous missing veneers, and the chest of drawers exhibits severe mold on all its surfaces.

As for its construction, it is built entirely of softwood and oak. It is veneered with magnificent, high-quality rosewood and violet wood. Of note, and confirming its transitional period, is the mahogany quarter-round molding on the drawers—a rather uncommon feature on a Louis XV commode.

The Restoration

Given its condition, dismantling was inevitable, and this step was extremely simple. The veneers on the crossbars, uprights, sides, and drawer fronts were re-glued and rehydrated under vacuum.

The chest of drawers was then re-glued with fish glue, and the varnish was restored before being refinished with a clear French polish. The bronze mounts were cleaned ultrasonically. The marble was simply cleaned and waxed.
