Restoration of a Regency commode veneered in rosewood and palisander. The commode arrived in very poor condition; the joints were completely detached, there was significant veneer loss, substantial structural deformation on the sides, and a patina heavily soiled by multiple layers of dark wax. The bronze mounts and locks had been added during a 19th-century restoration.
A classic restoration for this type of furniture: the sides and joints were re-glued as best as possible, missing veneer was replaced, the brass fluting was reattached, and most importantly, it was cleaned to reveal the wood's natural color without the dark topcoat. A clear French polish was applied, and the bronze mounts were simply cleaned. Congratulations to Maxence for this first restoration project and the numerous veneer grafts he carried out.
