Restoration of a bombé commode with a front veneered in satinwood with double boxwood stringing within amaranth borders, mounted on a fir frame with walnut drawer boxes. It opens with four drawers in three rows and is adorned with finely chased bronze mounts, silvered rather than gilded as was customary. The uprights are veneered with a facsimile of brass fluting, and the sides, decorated with a lozenge within a rectangle, echo the decorative motif of the front veneer. It is topped with a marble slab. Campan period green from the Hautes-Pyrénées, following its contours and highlighted by a crow's beak enhanced with a cavetto.
The frame assembly is perfectly consistent with that of Parisian furniture from the Regency period: satin and amaranth for the facing, solid fir for the frame with a back finish not pegged but held by dovetails on edge, solid walnut drawer boxes with insets on all sides.
A minor maintenance restoration for this chest of drawers. Some regluing, replacement of some old veneer grafts and a touch-up of the shellac finish.
