The refreshment table
It was in the 18th century, a century of thought, philosophy, and intimacy, that a fashion emerged among the wealthier classes of society: the intimate dinner or supper, without the intervention of household staff. Whether for romantic trysts or to plan the impending French Revolution, prying ears were not to be allowed.
This movement quickly influenced furniture and interior decoration in all its forms. Everyday objects were presented in smaller dimensions; beds, tables, chairs, and armchairs displayed a refined and less imposing design than in previous artistic movements.
This quest for intimacy also leads to changes in lifestyles. People prefer meals without waiters, to enjoy complete freedom without fear of certain conversations being repeated.
It is in this intimate spirit that the refreshment table was born. Replacing the waiters and waitresses around the meal, this object offers guests easy access to drinks by eliminating the need for a server.
