Restoration of a chest of drawers in mahogany burl veneer opening with three drawers, the uprights are straight and in Corinthian pilasters, the front feet in claw feet and the rear feet with three decreasing balls, known as in a rosary.
It is topped with a black Belgian granite and has retained all its original gilt bronzes, as well as its clover locks and key.
Regarding the gilt bronze fittings, the Corinthian capitals are decorated with projecting bird heads, palmettes, acanthus leaves, flowers and scrolls with a beautiful alternation of matte and burnished.
The pull knobs are also finely chiseled with a wreath of leaves. The three locks are clover-shaped.
State report
Besides severe sun damage, the main flaw was that the left side had two cracks, due to the dimensional shrinkage of the paneling. The lower left plinth had been replaced with a piece of solid beech. There were some missing veneer chips and cracks on the front legs.
The Restoration
The split side was glued back together, the missing plinth was replaced with sawn mahogany veneer, the missing veneer was replaced with sawn mahogany veneer, scraped, sanded and brought to the correct thickness before gluing.
The missing carvings on the claw feet were restored in beechwood without altering the patina. They were then cleaned and the color was touched up with acrylic paint.
Finally, a cherry-red polish was applied to restore the mahogany's beautiful color. The legs were simply waxed. The bronze mounts were regilded by ARTE, and the marble was restored by François Garnier.
