Here are some images of the restoration of a Regency period cartel clock in brown tortoiseshell and brass marquetry on an oak frame. Movement signed CLOUZIER A PARIS.
Jacques Clouzier (1692-1754)
He was received as a master watchmaker by Masterpiece on July 5, 1692, he is one of the greatest Parisian watchmakers of the Louis XIV and Regency era.
He became a member of the watchmakers' guild in the 1700s, then worked on rue St Antoine until 1726 and later on rue des Prêtres St Paul.
He remained active until his death in 1754, collaborating with the greatest cabinetmakers and bronze workers such as André Charles Boulle, Noël Gérard, and Jacques Caffieri.
State of affairs report
A classic example of Boulle marquetry. Some brass and tortoiseshell pieces are missing. And of course, all the brass is peeling off.
The Restoration
All the marquetry pieces were re-glued by vacuum infiltration of glue and the addition of fish glue where necessary for the restored pieces.
Finally, a sealant was applied, and then the cartel was varnished with a clear pad. The bronze parts were cleaned with demineralized steam.
