Here are some images of the restoration of this desk, which features a solid mahogany base and mahogany burl veneer for the rest. Note that the recessed top is made from a single 12mm thick plank of solid mahogany burl.
Here is the desk before restoration. The most work involved was on the legs. They were broken at the middle joint. They had already been repaired and were held together only by additional screws. Two cracks are visible on the front uprights, and the dovetail joints of the cabinet protrude through the veneer. There are a few small areas of missing veneer, but nothing serious.
After disassembling the legs, I noticed that some of the tenons were broken. But nothing beats a comb tenon for fixing this problem. Each leg was then individually glued and reinforced with dowels, then glued back together. For the exposed dovetail joints, it was impossible to fix this without completely removing the veneer. Therefore, the decision was made to simply push the joint inward and reinforce it with a wedge glued on with hot glue.
The desk was then refinished with a French polish. The leather was replaced and the felt was replaced with an empire green silk velvet.
