I really enjoyed working on this marquetry piece; I had always wanted to recreate this famous marquetry fresco. This allowed me to revisit David Roentgen's "mosaic marquetry" technique.
So I created a pack with a hornbeam leaf, a sycamore maple leaf and a pear leaf to make the characters, because there is nothing better than pear for reproducing skin color.
To tint the background, I dipped it in different baths to produce this sky effect. To shade the pear tree, I used the traditional hot sand technique.
The collage was done using fish glue, and the drying time was 12 hours. The result is excellent: no color migration.
The eyes and mouths were then engraved with a burin, after being glued, and then filled with rosin tinted with lampblack.
