Restoration of a Louis XV period cartel clock signed LEVEQUE A PARIS with its original movement. The surprising thing about this clock is that it is made of mahogany. And just as curious as it may seem, the tool marks, the quality of the workmanship and the wood appear entirely authentic. With its shape and rocaille bronze mounts typical of the Louis XV style, it could therefore be a cartel clock made from the second half of the 18th century. A precursor, then, of the appearance of the...’mahogany in French furniture.
The restoration involved removing the bronze elements and reattaching any loose solid wood and veneer components. Nothing was missing except for the lower crossbar of the rear door, which was restored in oak, as originally intended. A clear French polish was then applied, and the bronze elements were cleaned ultrasonically.
