Restoration of a pair of period armchairs Directory (circa 1795–1805), produced in solid mahogany, with the exception of the crossbeams which are plated.
These chairs display the clean, balanced lines characteristic of the Directoire style, a transitional period between the strictures of Louis XVI and the more formal codes of the Consulate. Assembled using mortise and tenon joints, they are crafted from solid mahogany. The straight armrests extend into turned supports, typical of the late Directoire period. The legs are turned in a baluster shape and taper slightly towards the bottom. The rectangular backs are framed with simple molding, while the upper section is adorned with a delicate carved shell motif. The lower panel features openwork with geometric fish-scale patterns. Four-leaf clovers are found on the armrests and the upper rail.
State of affairs report

The Restoration
These two armchairs were completely disassembled. The joints were inspected and adjusted. Two comb tenons were crafted to recreate these joints. The various small missing pieces were replaced with new solid mahogany. The cleats were remade in beech to provide a solid surface for the upholsterer. The old finish was cleaned, and then a coat of varnish was applied.
