We are continuing the series of clock faces we began a few months ago. Here are some images of the restoration of this Louis XV clock face. marquetry of brown tortoiseshell and brass on an oak frame.
State of affairs report
The structure is in a state of significant deterioration, and re-gluing of the joints appears necessary. All the marquetry is detached or shows signs of glue dehydration. Furthermore, the clock case has been heavily sanded, resulting in the disappearance of all traces of engraving on the brass elements. A small number of brass pieces are missing, and all the tortoiseshell parts are still present. The entire piece is heavily soiled and oxidized. The bronze mounts have been removed and cleaned by their owner.
The Restoration
- Consolidation of the wooden structure (re-gluing with hot glue).
- Cleaning and regluing of the brass marquetry elements.
- Reproduction of the missing patterns exactly.
- Shellac varnish finish applied with a pad
- Refitting of the bronze fittings
