Varnishes, oils, waxes, stains and other surface treatments contribute to the interpretation of the work, its protection and its material history.

Studying antique finishes allows us to rediscover the techniques, materials, and skills used in the creation of a piece of furniture. It also helps to distinguish an original finish from subsequent alterations that may have changed its appearance over time.

This approach relies on combining several sources: observation of the artwork, scientific analyses, stratigraphic examinations, study of alterations, historical documentation, and experimentation. Ancient treatises, such as The Art of the Carpenter by André-Jacob Roubo or The Art of the Painter, Gilder, Varnisher Jean-Félix Watin's work constitutes valuable testimony in this regard to the practices and materials used in the workshops of the 18th and 19th centuries.

From historical sources to the preserved object

Ancient texts describe in detail numerous recipes, materials, and application methods. Roubo, whose treatise was published between 1769 and 1774, is a particularly important source for the history of furniture techniques. However, these works should not be considered manuals directly applicable to modern restoration practices.

Their content must be placed in its context: author, period, intended audience, vocabulary used, and actual workshop practices. A critical study of the sources is therefore essential to understanding what these recipes can truly teach us about historical practices.

Analyzing a piece of furniture then allows us to compare this theoretical data with the material that has been preserved. It can reveal unexpected compositions, differences between interior and exterior surfaces, or even treatments that are not directly perceptible to the naked eye.

Read a finish like a stratigraphy

An antique finish is rarely a single layer. It may consist of a succession of preparations, colored layers, varnishes and surface treatments, sometimes separated by subsequent interventions.

These differences show that the finish must be studied in relation to its location, substrate, and function. They can also provide valuable information about workshop practices.

Observe, analyze, experiment

The study of ancient finishes combines direct observation with scientific methods adapted to the nature of the object.

Examination under different lighting conditions, particularly ultraviolet radiation, can reveal coating layers and identify specific interventions. Stratigraphic sections provide insight into the organization of the various layers. Analytical techniques can then be used to identify the materials: gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry to characterize certain organic constituents, X-ray fluorescence for studying metallic elements, and spectroscopic analyses for pigments and dyes.

The aim is not to multiply analyses, but to answer specific questions: what is the nature of the finish? Is it original? What function did it serve? Has it been modified? How has it aged? And what consequences should this information have on the conservation or restoration of the work?

Rediscovering old recipes: the example of Roubo varnish

The study carried out by the Centre for Research and Restoration of Museums of France on Roubo varnish particularly illustrates the dialogue between historical sources and experimentation.

Restoration campaigns on 18th- and 19th-century furniture revealed significant alterations to the varnishes and discoloration of the veneer. These observations led researchers to question the relationship between the composition of the varnishes, their aging, and their ability to protect the wood.

Recipes attributed to Roubo and Watin were then reproduced and adapted experimentally. In total, seventeen formulations were studied, including eight Roubo varnishes, eight Watin varnishes, and one shellac. The products were applied to various types of wood as well as to materials characteristic of Boulle marquetry, such as brass, pewter, and tortoiseshell.

This experiment reveals a crucial reality: Recreating an old finish does not necessarily mean literally reproducing a historical recipe. The researchers encountered difficulties in solubilizing the resins and obtained heterogeneous surfaces using the application methods described in the texts. The recipes therefore had to be adapted, particularly through the choice of solvents and the introduction of a final buffer phase to achieve a more homogeneous finish.

Understanding aging

Aging is an essential dimension in the study of finishes.

Light, variations in temperature and relative humidity, handling, and mechanical stress can gradually alter the properties of a finish. The varnish may yellow, crack, become opaque, or lose its optical and protective qualities.

To study these phenomena, test specimens can be subjected to artificial aging. In the study conducted by the C2RMF, varnished and unvarnished samples were exposed to light to assess the evolution of their appearance and the protective role of the different formulations. Colorimetric measurements, surface observations, and varnish removal tests were used to compare their behavior.

Initial results showed significant discoloration of certain wood species protected by shellac, whereas this discoloration was absent in samples treated with the Roubo and Watin varnishes tested. These results thus provided evidence supporting a protective role for certain historical formulations.

A finish can also be historical information.

Analyzing the finishes not only provides information on how a piece of furniture was protected or embellished, but can also contribute to its identification and attribution.

The finish thus becomes a true document. It preserves the trace of the materials used, the gestures of the craftsman, the aesthetic choices and sometimes the transformations that occurred during the life of the object.

From study to conservation-restoration

The aim of studying antique finishes is therefore not to systematically search for "the original recipe". It is primarily about understanding the object in its materiality and its history in order to determine the most appropriate intervention.

This approach avoids reconstructions based solely on appearance or theoretical knowledge of ancient techniques. Instead, it encourages consideration of the traces preserved on the artwork, the results of analyses, historical sources, and the lessons learned from experimentation.

Research on antique varnishes also shows that conservation-restoration must strike a balance between historical accuracy, material stability, reversibility of interventions, and legibility of the artwork. In the case of the Roubo and Watin experiments, the formulations studied exhibited, in particular, relative chemical stability and could be removed with the solvents used during their application, which is an important factor in their suitability for conservation-restoration.

A research project at the crossroads of history and science

Studying an old finish ultimately involves bringing together several disciplines: art history, history of techniques, conservation-restoration, chemistry, materials science and craft practice.

Ancient sources provide access to vocabulary and recipes. The object itself offers material evidence. Scientific analyses allow us to identify the materials and understand their composition. Finally, experimentation confronts hypotheses with the realities of implementation and aging.

It is this cross-fertilization of approaches that allows us to better understand ancient surfaces and to develop treatments that respect their materiality.

Studying a finish is therefore like reading a story on the surface of the object: that of a material, a know-how, a use and time.

Sources

A.-J.
